Standard servo electric cylinders perform well under pure axial push/pull force. But when the working condition brings lateral force, offset load or torque, ordinary actuators suffer rapid wear, rod bending and short service life. That’s where guided servo electric cylinders stand out. With built-in parallel guide rods, this actuator is specially designed to handle side loads and maintain stable linear motion.
As shown in our workshop photo, a guided servo cylinder consists of these core components:
Servo motor: Provides power for ball screw transmission, supports high-speed reciprocating movement, compatible with EtherCAT / CANopen bus control.
Ball screw drive assembly: Converts rotary motion into linear push and pull movement, ensures high positioning repeatability.
Parallel guide rods & linear bearings: Multiple high-precision optical guide rods fixed between upper and lower mounting plates. The guide rods bear all lateral force and torsional moment, while the central screw only bears axial thrust.
Top moving plate: Connects load or external mechanism, distributes force evenly to guide rods.
Base mounting flange: Convenient for installation and integration into automation frames or motion platforms.
The biggest structural difference from ordinary servo cylinders: The guide rods share the side load, so the main screw rod is protected from radial force damage.
✅ Strong side load resistance
Guide rods take lateral force instead of the ball screw. It can work reliably in scenarios with offset load and cross force, such as 3DOF motion platforms, avoiding screw deformation and early failure.
✅ High motion rigidity & low shaking
The double or four-guide-rod structure restricts rotation and deflection. The linear movement runs smoothly with minimal vibration even under high speed and cyclic reciprocating motion.
✅ Long service life & lower maintenance
Since the screw is isolated from side force, friction and wear are greatly reduced. Continuous repeated operation is available for long-hour automation jobs.
✅ High positioning repeatability
Linear guide mechanism guarantees straight travel path. It maintains consistent precision for repeated positioning tasks.
✅ Flexible customization
We can customize stroke, speed, rated load, mounting interface and protection grade to match different projects. For example, our 300mm stroke, 500mm/s, 50kg load version used on agricultural 3DOF tea trimming motion platform.
3DOF Motion Platforms
This is our mature application case. When the 3-axis platform tilts and swings continuously, each actuator suffers alternating lateral force. Guided servo cylinders perfectly bear the side load, making the whole platform run stably. It has been successfully applied to agricultural tea pruning equipment.
Automated Lifting & Positioning Equipment
Material lifting, workpiece positioning, packaging automation, pick-and-place with offset load.
Testing & Simulation Equipment
Small test benches, vibration simulation devices, fatigue test jigs that require frequent reciprocating tilt motion.
Outdoor Agricultural Automation Machinery
Farm field working environment with dust. With proper IP protection, guided servo cylinders can be equipped on agricultural trimming, cutting and harvesting motion devices.
Pressing & Assembly Station
Light force press-fitting, clamping mechanism, where load is not perfectly centered.
The upper moving plate and the base mounting plate form a whole frame together with the 4 parallel guide rods.
Keep guide rods parallel: The plates fix both ends of the guide rods. If the plate deforms, the guide rods will tilt, causing abnormal friction inside linear bearings.
Distribute side load evenly: In 3DOF platforms, alternating lateral force transfers to the top plate first. A rigid plate spreads force uniformly to all guide rods instead of concentrating stress on a single rod.
Provide standard mounting interface: The top plate connects to the moving platform frame; the bottom plate fixes the actuator to the base. Precise hole position tolerance simplifies on-site assembly.
Many low-cost guided servo actuators use thin aluminum sheets to cut costs, which leads to hidden risks under cyclic swing motion:
Plate bending and deformation under repeated load → guide rods misalignment
Uneven force on linear bearings → rising friction, abnormal noise and accelerated wear
Extra unexpected side force applied on ball screw → permanent screw deformation
Assembly hole position deviation → difficult installation, pre-tightening stress after assembly
For 3DOF agricultural trimming platforms, the actuators run continuously with frequent tilting movement. Weak mounting plates will shorten the whole system service life significantly.
Reasonable plate thickness: We calculate plate thickness according to dynamic load, to balance rigidity and weight. Too thick increases overall mass and dynamic inertia; too thin lacks stiffness.
High flatness machining: Strict milling and flatness inspection to guarantee parallelism between top and bottom plates.
Reinforcement structure option: For heavy load 3DOF systems, reinforcing ribs can be added on plates to boost rigidity without excessive weight gain.
Custom bolt hole layout: The hole pattern can be customized to match customer’s 3DOF platform frame, reducing modification work during integration.
